Southern Fried Salmon Patties: A Classic Comfort Food Favorite
Few dishes say “Southern comfort” quite like a crispy, golden-brown salmon patty. Known for their simple ingredients, rich flavor, and satisfying crunch, Southern Fried Salmon Patties have been a staple on dinner tables across the South for generations. Made with canned or fresh salmon, a few pantry staples, and fried to perfection, these patties are easy to make, budget-friendly, and incredibly delicious.
Whether you’re revisiting a beloved childhood memory or discovering this dish for the first time, salmon patties (also known as salmon cakes or croquettes) are the kind of humble, home-cooked meal that never goes out of style.
🐟 Ingredients
For the Salmon Patties:
- 1 (14.75 oz) can of pink salmon, drained and flaked (remove bones and skin if desired)
- 1 egg
- ⅓ cup finely diced onion
- ¼ cup finely diced green bell pepper (optional)
- ½ cup breadcrumbs or crushed saltine crackers
- 1 tablespoon cornmeal (optional for extra crunch)
- 2 tablespoons mayonnaise
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon Old Bay seasoning (or paprika for a milder flavor)
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 2–4 tablespoons vegetable oil (for frying)
Optional Garnishes:
- Lemon wedges
- Fresh parsley
- Hot sauce or tartar sauce for dipping
🍳 Instructions
Step 1: Prep the Salmon Mixture
In a medium bowl, combine the drained and flaked salmon with the egg, onion, bell pepper (if using), breadcrumbs or crackers, cornmeal, mayo, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and seasoning. Mix gently until everything is combined but not overly mashed—you want a bit of texture.
Step 2: Shape the Patties
Using your hands or a scoop, form the mixture into 6–8 small patties (about ½ inch thick). If the mixture is too wet, add more breadcrumbs or crushed crackers, 1 tablespoon at a time.
Step 3: Heat the Oil
Heat vegetable oil in a skillet over medium heat. You want enough oil to coat the bottom of the pan but not so much that the patties are swimming in it.
Step 4: Fry the Patties
Place the patties in the skillet, being careful not to overcrowd the pan. Fry for 3–4 minutes per side or until golden brown and crispy. Use a spatula to flip them gently so they don’t fall apart.
Step 5: Drain and Serve
Remove the patties from the pan and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to absorb excess oil. Serve hot, garnished with lemon wedges, chopped parsley, or your favorite dipping sauce.
