Opening Red Wine with a Paper Clip: A Simple and Ingenious Trick

We’ve all been there—excited to enjoy a glass of wine, but then we realize we’ve misplaced the corkscrew or bottle opener. Whether you’re at a picnic, traveling, or just having one of those days when things seem to go wrong, not being able to open a bottle of wine can feel like a disaster. But what if we told you there’s a quick and clever way to open a red wine bottle without a corkscrew? All you need is a simple paper clip!

This might sound like a trick from a survival guide, but it’s actually a nifty solution for when you’re caught unprepared. Here’s how you can easily open a bottle of red wine using just a paper clip.

What You Need:

  • A bottle of red wine (or any wine with a cork)
  • A large paper clip (ideally, a sturdy one—like the kind you’d use for office files)
  • A steady hand and a little patience

Step-by-Step Guide:

1. Unwind the Paper Clip:

Start by straightening out the paper clip. You can use a pair of pliers or simply your hands to unfold it into a straight wire. Ideally, the wire should be about 3-4 inches long. The more rigid and durable the paper clip, the easier it will be to manage during this process.

2. Bend the Paper Clip into a “Hook” Shape:

Once the paper clip is fully straightened out, bend it into a small hook at one end. The hook should be small enough to grip the cork but not so large that it will be difficult to maneuver. Think of this step as creating a DIY corkscrew.

3. Insert the Paper Clip Hook into the Cork:

Now comes the tricky part: inserting the paper clip into the cork. Take the hook you’ve made and carefully insert it into the cork, making sure the hook grabs onto the cork’s surface. Push the hook in as deep as possible, ideally about half an inch, ensuring it’s securely anchored.

If the cork is very tight or if you have trouble getting the hook in, you can gently twist or wiggle the paper clip to create a better grip.

4. Pull the Cork Out:

Once the hook is firmly in place, it’s time to slowly start pulling the cork out. Gently begin to pull upward with the paper clip, using your hand to stabilize the bottle. You’ll need a steady and consistent pulling motion, but don’t rush it. Just like with a corkscrew, you’ll feel the cork begin to loosen as you work.

It may take a little bit of patience, especially if the cork is stuck, but with gentle, persistent pulling, the cork should eventually come free.
