Homemade Wasp Trap: Grandpa’s Trusted Fix

Wasps can be a nuisance, especially during the warmer months when they buzz around your outdoor spaces, uninvited. If you’re looking for a simple, effective, and cost-friendly solution to rid your yard of these stingers, look no further. This homemade wasp trap, passed down from my grandpa, is a tried-and-true method that really works!

Why Choose a Homemade Wasp Trap?

  1. Affordable: You can create this trap using everyday household items.
  2. Chemical-Free: Avoid harmful pesticides and opt for a natural approach.
  3. Eco-Friendly: Repurpose items that might otherwise go to waste.
  4. Effective: Wasps are lured in and safely contained, leaving your outdoor space worry-free.

Materials You’ll Need

  • 1 empty plastic bottle (2-liter works best)
  • Scissors or a utility knife
  • String or wire (optional, for hanging the trap)
  • A sugary liquid bait (recipe below)
  • Tape (optional, for extra sealing)

Steps to Build the Trap

1. Prepare the Bottle

  • Take the empty plastic bottle and carefully cut off the top third of it using scissors or a utility knife. This will create a funnel shape with the top portion.

2. Make the Trap Funnel

  • Flip the cut-off top upside down and place it into the bottom part of the bottle. The bottle cap should be removed, leaving a small hole for the wasps to enter.

3. Secure the Funnel

  • Use tape to secure the funnel in place if necessary. This will ensure wasps can’t escape once inside.

4. Add the Bait

  • Pour your bait mixture into the bottom of the bottle, filling it about 2-3 inches.

5. Set or Hang the Trap

  • If you’d like to hang the trap, punch two small holes on opposite sides of the bottle and thread string or wire through them.
  • Place the trap in an area where wasps are most active, such as near garbage bins, fruit trees, or your outdoor dining space.
