It’s a hearty, crowd-pleasing meal that takes the beloved flavors of a chili cheese dog and transforms them into a delicious, baked casserole. Perfect for family dinners, game day, or any occasion when you need a satisfying meal, this recipe is simple to make and guaranteed to be a hit.
Ingredients:
- 8 hot dogs (beef, turkey, or vegetarian, depending on preference)
- 2 cups chili (homemade or canned)
- 1 package (8 oz) refrigerated crescent roll dough (or biscuit dough for a heartier option)
- 1 ½ cups shredded cheddar cheese (or any cheese of your choice)
- 1 tablespoon yellow mustard (optional, for extra flavor)
- 1 tablespoon ketchup (optional, for a touch of sweetness)
- ½ small onion, finely chopped (optional, for extra crunch and flavor)
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
- 1 teaspoon paprika (optional, for a smoky flavor)
Directions:
- Preheat the Oven: Start by preheating your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish or line it with parchment paper for easy cleanup.
- Prepare the Hot Dogs: Slice the hot dogs into bite-sized pieces or keep them whole, depending on your preference. If you’re using whole hot dogs, you may want to cut them in half or into thirds to make it easier to serve.
- Roll Out the Dough: Open the package of crescent roll dough and unroll it on a clean surface. If using crescent rolls, press the seams together to create one large sheet of dough. If you’re using biscuit dough, flatten each biscuit into a small circle. You will be placing the dough on top of the chili and hot dogs, so ensure it covers most of the surface.
- Assemble the Bake: Spread the chili evenly in the bottom of the prepared baking dish. If you’re using canned chili, it’s a good idea to warm it slightly before layering it in the dish. Once the chili is spread, layer the chopped hot dog pieces (or whole hot dogs) over the chili. Sprinkle the onions over the hot dogs, if using.
- Add the Cheese: Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese generously over the hot dogs and chili. The cheese will melt beautifully as the bake cooks, creating a gooey, delicious layer that holds everything together.
- Top with Dough: Carefully place the crescent roll dough (or biscuit dough) over the chili and cheese layer. It doesn’t have to be perfect — a few gaps are fine! The dough will puff up as it bakes, filling in the spaces. For added flavor, you can drizzle a little mustard and ketchup over the dough before baking, or sprinkle the top with garlic powder and paprika.
- Bake: Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the dough is golden brown and cooked through. The cheese should be melted and bubbly, and the chili should be hot and simmering beneath the crust.
- Serve and Enjoy: Once the Chili Cheese Dog Bake is ready, remove it from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before serving. Slice it into squares and serve with your favorite toppings like extra mustard, relish, or sliced jalapeños for a spicy kick.
