Sugar-Free, Butter-Free Apple Cake: A Healthier Twist on a Classic Dessert
Apple cake is a beloved classic, offering the comforting flavors of tender apples, warm spices, and a soft, moist texture. But for those looking for a healthier version, we’ve created a sugar-free, butter-free apple cake that doesn’t compromise on taste or texture. Whether you’re watching your sugar intake, following a dairy-free diet, or simply want to enjoy a lighter dessert, this recipe is perfect.
Ingredients:
- 3 medium-sized apples, peeled, cored, and chopped
- 1 cup whole wheat flour (or gluten-free flour, if preferred)
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg (optional)
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce (for moisture and sweetness)
- 1/4 cup almond milk (or any other non-dairy milk)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 large eggs (or egg replacer for vegan version)
- 1/2 teaspoon lemon juice (optional, to brighten the flavors)
- A pinch of stevia or your preferred sugar substitute (optional, depending on sweetness preference)
Directions:
- Preheat the Oven: Begin by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease or line an 8-inch round cake pan with parchment paper to prevent sticking.
- Prepare the Apples: Peel, core, and chop the apples into small cubes. If you prefer, you can use a mix of tart and sweet apples for a more complex flavor. Toss the chopped apples in a small amount of lemon juice to keep them from browning.
- Mix the Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the whole wheat flour, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. These ingredients will give your cake its structure and spice.
- Mix the Wet Ingredients: In a separate bowl, combine the unsweetened applesauce, almond milk, vanilla extract, and eggs (or egg replacer). If you like a sweeter cake, you can add a pinch of stevia or another sugar substitute. Whisk until smooth.
- Combine Wet and Dry: Gradually add the wet mixture to the dry ingredients, stirring just until combined. The batter should be thick but still spreadable. Gently fold in the chopped apples, ensuring they are evenly distributed throughout the batter.
- Bake: Pour the batter into your prepared cake pan and spread it out evenly. Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. If you’re using a different pan size, check the cake after 30 minutes, as the baking time may vary.
- Cool and Serve: Let the cake cool in the pan for about 10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely. This will help the cake set and maintain its shape. You can enjoy it as is or dust it with a light sprinkle of cinnamon before servin
