5 Ways to Tell If an Egg Is Fresh or Rotten
Eggs are a staple in most kitchens, but how do you know if they’re still good to eat? Fresh eggs taste better, cook better, and are safer to consume. Luckily, there are simple tests you can do at home to determine whether an egg is fresh or has gone bad. Here are five easy ways to check the freshness of your eggs.
1. The Water Test (Float Test)
How it works:
- Fill a bowl or glass with cold water.
- Gently place the egg inside.
Results:
✅ Fresh Egg → Sinks to the bottom and lays flat on its side.
🔶 Slightly Old Egg → Stands upright but remains at the bottom.
❌ Rotten Egg → Floats to the top (discard immediately).
Why? As eggs age, the air pocket inside grows larger, making older eggs more buoyant.
2. The Shake Test
How it works:
- Hold the egg close to your ear.
- Gently shake it.
Results:
✅ Fresh Egg → No sound (the egg white and yolk are still firm).
❌ Rotten Egg → Sloshing sound (liquid moving inside due to aging).
Why? As eggs get older, the whites and yolk break down, creating more liquid movement inside.
